EDM Challenge - Draw A Present You Received

Ok, so I just joined EDM, and one of the reasons I really wanted to join was to participate in the weekly drawing challenges. I'm still a newbie to the group, so I'm not quite sure how exactly the challenge works...I don't think there are any prizes or anything, which is completely fine. The main reason I want to do the challenges is simply to challenge myself and give me reason to sketch. I haven't sketched in years. I guess it's sorta like writing out your goals...you're more likely to actually do them that way.

I used to draw all the time...from doodles in the sides of my notebooks in school to sketch book drawings for my art classes...I've taken a couple drawing classes as a kid, not to mention all the other artsy things I've done, but it's been a long time since I just sat down and sketched something. Tonight, I sat down with my SO and while he watched Superman (the original), I sketched this drawing of a cashmere Brooks Brothers sweater he gave me for Christmas. I placed the sweater on the edge of my coffee table (was considering putting it on my SO's legs, but what if he moved?! The table was more stable. Anywho, the drawing was almost...meditative...is that a word? Ok, just checked and dictionary.com says it is a word and I spelled it right...yes! Anywho, I'm glad that I had the time tonight to work on this...even though it didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it to.

I'm almost embarassed to show this. I actually think that it...basically...that is sucks. I'm not very proud of this drawing, but you gotta start somewhere, right? I suppose it's not too terrible considering how long I've been away from drawing, but...ok...no more delaying

Ok...I know what you're thinking...I should just stick to designing jewelry, right? Oh drawing talent from my youth...please come back soon

It looks good to me! You've gotten some nice folds/drapes and you EVEN put the label in it!! I honestly think you did a very good job!! More, more, more.

Hello, Congratulations on posting your first drawing. You have done a great job on the jumper. It's a difficult thing to put your work out there in the beginning. You will find that your work improves in leaps and bounds, especially when you draw every day.

I'm glad you've joined in the challenges, you're off to a good start. Nope, there are no prizes, no competition - just the fun of challenging ourselves and enjoying the bliss of drawing and painting.

So glad you decided to share your sketch! I really like the values achieved and I'm very impressed by your handling of the folds. "Folds" were a previous challenge - so you've done another challenge as well.

Nice job on a pretty complex subject. Thanks for sharing it.

First, Welcome to EDM!
Second, I love your style and jewelry, even though I am not a jewelry gal myself. After taking a craft class in college, I can appreciate how difficult jewelry designing can be. Great start with the present sketch. It will get easier, and I think it's great to post the early stuff, gives you something to reflect on later.

It is not a bad drawing at all, really nice and more so because it is your first in years. Hope you are enjoying yourself while drawing, that is important.

I think it captures your sweater nicely, but I hear you,I used to draw too,and I am sorely out of practice. Hows that for a run-on sentence!

oh my gosh...how nice of all of you to leave me such sweet comments...awww...thanks guys! i appreciate all the compliments...very good motivation to continue my sketching!

brenda y - i almost didn't do the label, but i guess i'm kind of a perfectionist...although, really i shoulda drawn the price tag b/c that was still on it when i drew it.

Thanks Shelly!

Jen - hopefully, i'll have time to draw everyday...i hope my co-workers don't catch me sketching too much at work!

Karen - thanks! that's exactly why i want to do the challenges, so im in good shape :)

Shirley - the folds were what made it so difficult...didn't know it was a previous challenge...thanks!

Casey - you're welcome and thanks for stopping by!

Thank you Lin for the compliments! I'll email you the city ;)

Melissa, thanks for the welcome...jewelry is often difficult - especially the wire-wrapping, but it's def lots of fun too creating beautiful things. im hoping this blog will help serve as a good way to document the progression in my sketches (and that's hoping there is some...lol)

Paulien - it was so relaxing to be drawing again - to forget everything else i had to do at the moment and just focus in on creating the sketch...very meditative!

Jungle Dream Pagoda - thanks! we can work on improving our sketches together! are you in EDM?

Thanks again all for the sweet comments!
